Joe Dimaggio, A Yankees Baseball Legend

Joe DiMaggio   was surely the most complete all-around player of his generation. But there is  more to his legend than that. Baseball has produced many sports legends but it has produced only one DiMaggio. DiMaggio was a legend both on and off the field, an lasting symbol of baseball  fame , beloved and esteemed by Americans fully, fifty years after his ultimate game in 1952. A class act.

Son of Italian immigrants, Giuseppe Paolo (Joe) DiMaggio Jr., the 8th of nine children, was born Nov.  twenty five, 1914, in Martinez, California, a small village north of San Francisco where his  dad  worked as a fisherman. When they became of age DiMaggio and his brothers went to sea with their dad . Joe did not like the work and tried to avoid it. Baseball eventually did the trick.

Joe spent three seasons with the San Francisco Seals before bursting onto the major league scene in 1936 when  he helped the Yankees begin another dynasty. The Yanks won four straight World Series Championships starting with his first year on the team at  center field. In DiMaggio’s 13  seasons they won  ten pennants and nine World Series!

Tens of thousands of Italian Americans cheered him on the day  he first appeared in  center field for the Yanks, May  three, 1936.

DiMaggio soon became known as “Joltin’ Joe” for the power of his bat and “The Yankee Clipper” for the speedy clippers that crossed the Atlantic Ocean under sail. DiMaggio hit a league leading 46 homers in 1936. Over his  thirteen year career the total was 361.
His bat thundered in 1937 with 167 RBI’s and an average of .346 followed by a .328 in ‘38 and a whopping .380 for 1939.

He is  best remembered for his Streak, his fifty-six game hitting  streak of 1941. It started May 15th and ended July 17th.  He was hitting  .406 and fans all over the country anxiously checked each game day in the papers and on radio to see if the Yankee Clipper had kept his streak going.

The Less Brown Orchestra had a   huge   hit that year with their recording “Joltin’  The Yankee Clipper”  that sung the praises of The Yankee Clipper”.

His famous 52 game streak was immediately followed by another, this time hitting  in 16  consecutive games.

He was drafted into the army in 1942.  He was batting  .305 at the time. After serving three years in the army and World War II Joe  returned to the Yankees in 1946.

In 1948 DiMaggio had returned to the height of his form, winning the home run title with 39, the RBI crown with 155, and the batting title with a .320 average.
He retired in 1951 with a career batting average of .325. But for his service in World War II, that average could have been higher yet.

Soon after retiring Joe met and married the equally famous Marilyn Monroe.  They were wed in 1954.  He was 39, she 27 .  The marriage ended in divorce nine months later but even after their divorce, they continued to be  friends . After her death in 1962, DiMaggio supervised her funeral arrangements  and regularly placed flowers on her grave for decades thereafter.

His   renoun was recorded in song. Simon and Garfunkel wanted to express a longing for another gentler time in their big  hit “Mrs. Robinson” and wrote, “Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio ? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.”

After DiMaggio retired Joe  hosted pre-game TV shows, game shows and made numerous  television commercials that Americans loved to see. Joe  was elected to the Baseball Hall of fame in 1955.

DiMaggio  died at his home in Hollywood, Florida, on March  eight, 1999.
A modest man, DiMaggio did not revel in fame  but did play with the enthusiasm and discipline required to earn it. Joe DiMaggio  is remembered with admiration not only by sports fans, but by all who know his story.

The New York Times once wrote of him, “It   isn’t for DiMaggio’s records that we  remember him.  he is  best remembered for the persona of  Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio .  He remains a living symbol of excellence, elegance, power and, to be sure , gentleness.”
